Project Profile
High-Utility Custom Detached Garage by Jason Boutwell Construction
Lynne Colley
We are so glad we found Jason! He uses the best tradesmen who are excellent in their craft. He gave us excellent suggestions for things we didn’t even think of. And his attention to detail is unmatched. Jason took care of everything—we did not worry about a single detail during the entire project. Actually, we had two projects, one a new build and one a remodel. Not a single minute of concern in either project. You just can’t go wrong if Jason is in charge!

Efficiency and durability are the cornerstones of a Jason Boutwell Construction project. This recently completed Custom Detached Garage was engineered for a homeowner who requires a professional-grade workspace that can handle both the administrative side of a business and the rugged demands of a technical workshop. By prioritizing a “clean slate” design, we delivered a multi-purpose building that maximizes utility through its smart layout and high-quality materials.
A Targeted Approach: The Main Garage Entry
The functionality of the property begins with the direct approach to the primary workspace. The main driveway leads to a spacious two-bay garage entrance, providing a clear and professional path for daily vehicle access.
Adjacent to the main structure is an expansive covered carport. Rather than a standard driveway, this area features a large, professional-grade cement parking pad that extends directly from the building. This creates a dedicated, level workspace outside the main bays, perfect for maneuvering vehicles or setting up an outdoor project. The transition from the structured cement to the natural surroundings keeps the focus on the building itself as a self-contained hub of productivity.
The Entryway: Immediate Access and Control
The entrance to this building is designed for the person who is ready to get to work. Rather than a traditional foyer, the formal pedestrian door opens directly into the main building environment. This layout is built for efficiency: as soon as you step through the door, the wide-open garage bays are to your right, and a private door to the office (or finished storage suite) is located immediately to your left.
Independent Electrical Control
Functionality is built into the very first wall you see. To the left of the entry door, we installed a dedicated electrical fuse panel. This independent sub-panel is one of the most important technical details of the build. It ensures the garage has its own dedicated power hub, independent of the main house.
Whether the homeowner is running high-draw power tools in the garage or sensitive computer equipment in the office suite, the electrical system is engineered to handle the load. This prevents breaker trips and ensures that the building operates with the reliability of a commercial-grade shop.
The Office Suite: A Blank Canvas for Business
To the left of the entrance is a finished interior room, perfectly suited for a professional office or high-end storage. Currently kept as a “blank canvas” to showcase the crisp construction and minimalist industrial aesthetic, the room features:
Florencent Lighting
Bright lorescent light provide clean, daylight-style illumination across the entire space.
Natural Light
A window provides a view of the property, ensuring the room feels open.
Durable Flooring
The cement floor provides a modern look that is incredibly easy to clean and maintain.
The Two-Bay Garage: Built for Performance
To the right of the entry is the heart of the building: the two-bay garage. This is a pure performance environment, built with high-clearance ceilings and clean, finished walls. The floor is a single, seamless concrete pour with a smooth-finish, designed to withstand the weight of vehicles and the demands of a working shop.
A window in the garage area ensures the interior remains bright and ventilated during the day. This space is intentionally open, allowing the homeowner to customize the layout with their own tool chests, workbenches, or vehicle lifts. The direct proximity to the entry door and the office suite makes it the ultimate “commute-free” workspace.
The Exterior Workshop: The High-Utility Carport
Integrated into the building’s design is an expansive covered carport that serves as a 24-hour exterior workshop. This area was designed for the serious enthusiast who needs a ventilated, sheltered environment for mechanical projects, detailing, or fabrication.
The carport is equipped with specialized features to support a productive workflow:
Corner-Mounted Cage Fans
To maintain airflow we installed compact, round caged fans in the corners of the carport.
Integrated Task Lighting
High-powered exterior lights are positioned to eliminate shadows, allowing projects to continue safely long after the sun goes down.
Strategic Natural Light
A window on the carport wall provides a visual link back into the main garage bays and lets natural light pass through the building.
Future Growth: The Standing-Height Attic
One of the most valuable “hidden” features of this Jason Boutwell Construction project is the massive attic located above. Accessed via an interior entry point, this space spans the entire footprint of the building.
While many detached buildings use restrictive trusses that limit utility, we engineered this attic with standing-height clearance. The wood beam framing is currently exposed and unfinished, serving as a high-capacity storage area for heavy equipment, parts, or archives.
However, because an adult can stand comfortably throughout the space, it is a “future-proof” investment. This area is structurally ready for a future “Phase 2” build-out—whether that be a guest suite, a home gym, or a secondary studio—adding significant long-term value to the property without changing the building’s footprint.
The Jason Boutwell Difference
A Custom Detached Garage should be a tool that helps you achieve more. This project showcases what happens when a builder focuses on the details that matter: smooth concrete floors, specialized task lighting, independent electrical hubs, and expansion-ready attics.
By utilizing a “clean-slate” design and durable materials, Jason Boutwell Construction has delivered a multi-purpose building that is built to last and ready to grow. It is a professional-grade structure that proves quality construction and smart layout are the keys to a successful property addition.
